A Growing List ...
This list of destinations will continue to grow. There is no shortage of places to explore. I simply follow the enormous blanks in guidebooks. For the winter of 2009/2010 I have planned research trips to Yunnan's not yet described border area's with Vietnam and Myanmar, where many different ethnic minority groups live. For 2010 I have set my eyes on the Silkroad province of Gansu, where surely much more is worth visiting than guidebooks suggest. These explorations provide me with my best travel experiences: every day brings its surprises, every day brings something new. You are welcome to join me.

With just a map and my knowledge of Chinese...
I found these places by travelling with just a map and my knowledge of Chinese. Local people always showed me on my way, explained what I had to see in their area, and when and where to visit their markets. Fascinatingly, in rural area's their world is contained in a one hundred kilometre radius at most. They haven't been beyond, wouldn't know how to go there.
I wish to thank Goto Hiroto for his suggestions on area's to explore.

New Destinations
What the guidebooks do not tell ....
This is a collection of original destinations in China's West, not
yet discovered by guidebooks and tourists.
They are great places to visit, offering the traveller traditionally
dressed ethnic minorities, or spectacular natural beauty, or cultural
relics, or a combination of these. And their remoteness gives them
additional charm.
